Kavumu. Renewed fighting broke out early Sunday morning in Kavumu, in Kabare Territory, plunging the area into chaos as clashes erupted between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters.
Residents reported hearing intense gunfire around 5:00 a.m., forcing the population to remain indoors.
“The gunfire was heard around 5:00 a.m. All activities here are disrupted; people have stayed in their homes and haven’t gone to church. Even public transportation is disrupted,” a local source said.
Markets, shops, and small businesses remained closed throughout the morning, while transportation services were suspended. The exchanges of fire have effectively paralyzed economic and social life in the town.
Tensions have been mounting in Kavumu since Friday, with intermittent clashes between the two armed groups raising fears of further escalation in this part of South Kivu.
The latest violence underscores the fragile security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where armed confrontations continue to disrupt civilian life.
